A few of us got together to play music at Elmer Rich's home in Westover, West Virginia this evening. Here's Elmer playing the "Forked Deer". Tom Gibson on guitar.Elmer's version of this tune comes from his family and is just a bit different than the usual.I panned over a bit so that you can see a few of Elmer's ribbons hanging on his lamp shade.

Dec 2, 2008 - Once again a nice video. If WV weren't so far from here, I'd consider driving out to play with you all! Tell Elmer that Ramblin' Dave thanks him for being here on YouTube -- Elmer's willingness to share allows this hack from the North Country to persevere and learn how to get it right. And thanks, YewPiney.

Dec 2, 2008 - I'll print out your comment and give to Elmer next time we get together. Our Friday night jam is on hold for a couple weeks, so we'll probably go over to his house and play again one evening.Elmer loves to play. He's 89 now and always the last man playing; I think he'd play every waking minute if any of us could keep up with him.

Dec 2, 2008 - Go Elmer! What a grand fiddler...please pass that along to him. He is a great inspiration & I really appreciate you bringing him to You Tube. He is a shining star in my eyes.

Dec 2, 2008 - Thanks. I'm sure Elmer will be glad to hear he has fans on the internet.

Dec 2, 2008 - Well, tell Elmer we love to hear him play! Does he have any more crooked tunes in his bag of tricks?

YewPiney Says:

Dec 2, 2008 - Lots. I'll try to post another interesting one soon.

Dec 2, 2008 - Very good! Around here, it seems that the old time fiddlers are being replaced by cookie-cutter fiddlers who all take lessons and play what we call Texas style. It's all good music, but nothing can truly replace a good old time fiddle player like this gentleman.

Dec 2, 2008 - I love how the each of older fiddle players was so unique, and also the connections you hear to the area they grew up in and people they heard and played with.

Dec 2, 2008 - It's a classic for sure. Just about every fiddler played it and had their own twist on it.I recorded Elmer playing another classic, Leather Britches, last weekend and will try to get it posted later today
